VOLUNTEER
FAQs

IS THERE AN AGE REQUIREMENT?
Firefighters must be at least 18 years old. Family members of all ages are included in fire company events. There is no upper age limit.

IS THIS A PAID POSITION?
This is an unpaid, volunteer position. The skills you learn can help you succeed in many careers, however.

HOW OFTEN DO I HAVE TO VOLUNTEER?
No one can attend every training session or respond to every call. We appreciate the time you are able to dedicate to serving our community! (Drills are really fun, though. You’ll want to be here!)

ARE TRAINING AND GEAR PROVIDED?
YES! We provide all the training you need at no cost to you. Gear is also free for volunteers. You don’t need prior experience, only the will to learn and to help your community!

WHAT MAKES FIREFIGHTING IN UPPER MORELAND SO INTERESTING AND CHALLENGING?
Upper Moreland Township has so much variety in its land uses and housing types – from single-family and multi-story apartment buildings in dense neighborhoods to natural areas, large commercial stretches, schools, medical facilities, and senior housing options. A vast transportation network including the Pennsylvania Turnpike and SEPTA rail lines ties it all together.  This makes for a huge variety of emergency situations requiring emergency response that’s tailored to match. You’ll never be bored, and, thanks to free training and gear, you’ll always be prepared.

AM I EXPECTED TO FUNDRAISE FOR THE DEPARTMENT?
NO! Upper Moreland Township Fire Department is FULLY FUNDED by Upper Moreland Township! Our firefighters are not burdened with fundraising responsibilities and can focus on training and emergency response.

This is an exciting township for firefighting. We have everything from high rise buildings to townhomes to single family homes and, of course, industrial areas. Accidents on the turnpike and local roads also hone our lifesaving skills.
